Agricultural Technology/Agrotechnology and Horticulture

Modern farms and agricultural operations work far differently than those a few decades ago, primarily because of advancements in technology, including sensors, devices, machines, and information technology. Today’s agriculture routinely uses sophisticated technologies such as robots, temperature and moisture sensors, aerial images, and GPS technology. These advanced devices and precision agriculture and robotic systems allow businesses to be more profitable, efficient, safer, and more environmentally friendly.

Horticulture is the branch of plant agriculture dealing with garden crops, generally fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants. The word is derived from the Latin hortus, “garden,” and colere, “to cultivate.” As a general term, it covers all forms of garden management, but in ordinary use it refers to intensive commercial production. In terms of scale, horticulture falls between domestic gardening and field agriculture; though all forms of cultivation naturally have close links

Agro ecology

Agro ecology is a science, a collection of practices and a Social movement. As a science, it studies interactions among diverse elements of the agro ecosystem. As a collection of practices, it seeks property farming systems that optimize and stabilize yields. Agro ecology pursues multifunctional roles for agriculture, promotes social justice, nurtures identity and culture, and strengthens the economic viability of rural areas. Family farmers hold the tools for practising Agro ecology. They're  keepers of the information and knowledge required for this agenda. Therefore, family farmers round the world are the keys components for manufacturing food in an agro ecological method.

Agronomy - branch of agricultural science that deals with the study of crops and soils they grow in. Agronomists work to develop ways that may improve efficiency of soil and increase the yield of food and fiber crops. They indulge in analysis of crop rotation, irrigation and voidance, plant breeding, soil classification, soil fertility, weed management, and alternative areas.

Seed science and technology

Seed science and technology involves disciplines like plant production, agronomy, plant physiology, plant science, entomology and plant pathology. The seed  most vital to begin with for a healthy plant. If a seed isn't viable a it won't germinate. If a seed has low vigour a weak sprout may emerge that eventually will succumb to environmental conditions or will be attacked by pathogens or insects. It’s important to confirm that the seed is viable and can produce to vigorous seedlings that would stand up to unfavourable environmental conditions and pests.

Correct sampling of a seed is vital before any tests are done on the seed. The purity, physical and genetic, should be determined before testing. All seed ought to be tested for viability, that is, the percentage of germination should be determined and recorded on the seed lot.

Agricultural Practices

Number of innovative farmers and scientists are taking a unique path, moving toward a farming system that's sustainable—environmentally, economically, and socially. this method has space for farms of all sizes, manufacturing a wide range of foods, fibers, and fuels habituated to native conditions and regional markets. It uses progressive, science-based practices that maximize productivity and profit while also minimizing the harm caused to environment.

Development of commercial Horticulture Farms

Availability of quality planting material is extremely essential for a prosperous commercial vegetable cultivation. Farmers usually prepare little nurseries in their curtilage entirely for private usage. However in the event of pest and disease incidence, natural disaster or field mortality of plants in early stages, the farmer doesn’t have doesn’t have enough time to nurture a new nursery. To deal with this issue farmers are supplied with polyhouses/nethouses for production of quality planting material on commercial purpose in protected conditions. They are supplied with the structure, with accessories and initial consumables, and are trained in field concerning advanced nursery management technologies like soil solarisation, grafting, sowing, fertilisation, raised beds, pest and disease management activities, etc.

Bacterial Diseases of Plants/ Viral Diseases of Plants

Bacteria - single-celled microorganisms, Usually 1-2 µm in size that can’t be seen with the unaided eye. Plant associated bacteria could be useful or detrimental. All plant surfaces have microbes on them (termed epiphytes), and a few microbes live within plants (termed endophytes). Some are residents and some are transient. Bacteria are among the microbes that in turn colonize plants as they mature. Individual microorganism cells cann’t be seen without the aid of a magnifier, however, huge populations of bacteria come into sight as aggregates in liquid, as biofilms on plants, as viscous suspensions plugging plant vessels, or colonies on petri dishes within the laboratory. For useful functions or as pathogens, populations of 106 CFU (colony-forming units/millilitre) or higher are usually needed for bacteria to funtion as biological control agents or cause infectious disease.

  • Classes of bio pesticides
  • Advantages of using bio pesticides

Horticulture Market Analysis

The development of plants within a greenhouse, particularly throughout rainy, autumn, and winter seasons is an agricultural fail-safe and an emerging back garden hobby. Horticultural lighting solutions aim to induce photosynthesis in plants with the application of photoperiodic and supplemental lighting. The evolution of LEDs in horticultural lighting solutions has led to a positive impact in the market. When compared to alternative lighting sources, LEDs are safer to work, generates less heat, lasts longer and can be integrated into control systems.

Horticulture VS Agriculture

Horticulture is outlined in a strict sense because the science that employs special techniques and strategies to cultivate plants, together with methods used to properly condition the soil for seed planting or planting tubers.

Agriculture - Science of growing food crops and rearing animals for farming. It involves the entire network of processes utilized with in the redirection of the natural flow of the food chain and the rechanneling of energy.

An economical and prosperous animal agriculture traditionally has been the mark of a powerful, well-developed nation. Such agriculture permits a nation to store huge quantities of grains and alternative foodstuffs in concentrated form to be utilised for animal growth in turn for human consumption during such emergencies as war or natural disaster. Furthermore, meat has long been recognized for its high nutritious value that contributes to stronger and healthier people.

Ruminant (cud-chewing) animals like cattle, sheep, and goats convert enormous quantities of pasture forage, harvested roughage, or by-product feeds, along with non protein nitrogen such as urea, into meat, milk, and wool. Ruminants are thus highly important; 60% of the world’s farmland is in meadows and pasture. Poultry additionally converts feed expeditiously into protein; Milk is the most whole and oldest  animal foods.

Families, Food and Fitness

Food and Fitness go hand in hand. When and what you is vital to the way you feel when you exercise, whether it is a casual exercising or coaching for a contest.

Healthy Food Choices in Schools

It is vital in assisting your kid to develop healthy feeding habits. Try inculcating these habits from the time they are young, before they begin to attend school. Teach your kid what varieties of food are healthy. This will build their confidence in making smart decisions. Set an ideal example at home. This will have impact on the choices they make now and in the future. Inform your child regarding the necessity of a healthy lunch. It provides them with sufficient energy to learn and be active mentally and physically.

Horticultural therapy

Horticultural therapy is to assist patients to learn new skills or regain those which are lost. Horticultural therapy helps improve memory, cognitive abilities, task initiation, language skills, and socialization. In rehabilitation, horticultural therapy can facilitate muscle strengthening and improve coordination, balance, and endurance. In vocational horticultural therapy settings, people learn to work individually, problem solve, and follow directions.

Post-harvest management/Postharvest science/Postharvest physiology

Post-harvest management consists of the various technologies and practices undergone by the farmer, farmer’s teams or cooperatives and/or business enterprise firms, from the farm to the plate, to handle the crop production after the harvest, up to its final destination like storing, transport, cleaning, sorting, processing and packing.
