Most farms in the developing world are too minor to benefit tractor or additional machinery services and their main alternative is animal power. The innumerable welfares of livestock farming can definitely result in development in growth of agronomy, agroeconomy, biological ecosystem and other agricultural fields.

Market Research Report of Agriculture in South Africa

South Africa is the dominant country in Africa in agribusiness. But due to unfavourable climate condition, aridity of land and unavailability of sufficient water; agriculture face huge problem and thus lacking behind in foreign competition. The agricultural sector employs around 5 per cent of the total labour force and accounts for 7 per cent of total exports. 

Sugar cane is one of the main crops produced in South Africa, followed by maize and wheat. Maize and oranges are the main export crops in South Africa. Between 1999 and 2009, maize production was increased by 52 per cent and wheat production increased by 13 per cent. But in 2009, sugar cane production decreased by 3 per cent.  South Africa imports more from neighbours like USA, UK, Thailand, Germany, Indonesia, China etc. In 2009, South Africa imported around US$325 million worth of fruits, vegetables and spices.

In recent years, South Africa is trying to make room for exporters and it exports cocoa, cereals, canned beverages, oranges, fats and oils, fish, seafood and sugar to its neighbour like UK, Netherland, US, Japan and European Union (Figure 1 & 2). South Africa is trying to mark itself by increasing trade to improve Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Gross Farming Income (GFI). Exports value of GDP increased from 1970 to 2005 of an average of 14 per cent.  The value of agricultural exports increased from 5% to 51 per cent from 1990 to 2008.

The gross income of agricultural production was estimated at 171258 million in 2012, in compare to 149774 million from 2011 with an average increase of 11.5 per cent. The gross income from horticultural products was increased by 12.5% in 2013. The gross value of animal products, field crops and horticultural products contributed much of the gross economic with 47.2%, 28.3% and 24.5% respectively. Also South Africa has improved in wine exports faster than other countries and adds around 40 per cent to export value (Figure 3). The weighted average price of animal products increased in 2013 with an average of 11.9%. More trades have been received for dairy products, poultry meat and meat products, fish and wine.

Projections: Agricultural Growth by next 5-10 years in South Africa

Agricultural exports from South Africa to other BRIC countries increased from 2.8% to 7.2% during last ten years. Agriculture trade balance also increased during last 10 years. The agricultural sector added only 3 per cent of the gross domestic value in 2010 and it is predicted to be 1.5 per cent by 2030. As per the statistical report, gross domestic production was highest in 2015 (73705 ZAR Million) but predicted to be lowered in 2020 (Figure 4).

The South African field crops and grains sector is experiencing continuous healthy growth than other sectors. South Africa is experiencing a huge soybean harvestation from few past years which is may bring uncomfortable situation for the livestock sector.

Barley production is forecasted to increase markedly in the next 10 years given the opportunity to malting facility in the country. An overview of the table grape industry projects a positive outlook in terms of production and price. The area under grapes is expected to increase by 3%, whereas the price per ton is expected to increase at an average rate of 14%, over the next 10 years. Production of wheat and coarse grains is forecasted to increase by 16% and 22% respectively, in 2022.

The outlook for poultry demand is still positive. The projections in upcoming demand for chicken production are going to be increased by 1.73 million tons and approximately 839 thousand tons of chicken will be imported to meet the demands. In 2017, beef and veal consumption is also expected to increase around 16.2 per cent. Decreasing in total sheep numbers and fast population growth in South Africa have led to an increase in demand and followed by subsequent of mutton and lamb meat and their products. South Africa is projected to remain importer of pork. Pork consumption is forecasted to grow by 23.9% towards 2017. The consumption of eggs is expected to be increased by 33%. South Africa is expected to remain largest mohair producer in the world with 50.4% of the total world production.

Projected Agricultural Growth by next 10-20 years in Worldwide

With fast growth of population, food demand is rapidly increasing. So, agricultural sectors analysed agriculture market and forecasted future market of agriculture. Agricultural market is projected to increase with developing countries showing major export growth. On first position with world’s largest population, excellent agri-market growth and rapidly growing agri-food sectors, China is capturing most of the global agri-markets with high production and export-import business, followed by India, US and other regions.

World production of wheat and coarse grains is projected to increase by 16% and 22%, towards 2022. Wheat consumption has also projected to increase in both the developing and the developed countries. World sugar production is projected to increase by 1.9% in 2022. World cotton production is expected to grow by 1.6% p.a. in 2022, as the global stocks are gradually reduced. Biofuel production is projected to increase with global production of sugar cane (29%), vegetable oil (15%), and coarse grains (12%) by 2022. Biodiesel production is projected to grow faster, at 4.5% p.a. to reach 41 billion litres in 2022.

The world population is estimated to reach 9 billion by the year 2050. Modern Agriculture shows significant potential in enhancing food productivity while at the same time providing sustainable management of resources, business and technologies. The global precision farming market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 13.09% from 2015 to 2022, to reach over $6.43 billion by 2022.

China and Africa region will compensate economic losses in agri market raised by other developing countries. They will continue to capture 56 per cent of world feed consumption market by sharing grains, crops, horticulture commodities by 2050. Per capita meat consumption in the developing countries is likely to grow at slower rates than past decades. Developing countries may increase livestock consumption towards 2050. The latest projections of the European Union forecast only 3 percent increase in the per capita meat consumption in 2020. Small declines in bovine and small increases in poultry and pork consumption also projected towards 2022.

Gradual increase in per capita consumption of dairy and dairy products will come from the developing countries. The developing countries will continue to increase per capita consumption than developed countries. Consumption in Asia will be more than other developing countries.

Arable land will expand by some 70 million ha in developed countries, with the expansion in developing countries by about 120 million ha. Major of the land expansion and water consumption in developing countries has projected to take place in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America.
